Project Art Works ran a innovative, inclusive pilot art course for adults who have severe learning disabilities in partnership with Brighton University and Hastings College of Arts and Technology (HCAT).
The course involved 8 students from the 2nd year of the HND/HNC in Fine Art at Hastings College of Arts and Technology. They worked alongside 8 people who have learning disabilities, and who are currently in receipt of adult community day care provision, on a 10 week programme of Project Art Workshops at the Project Art Works studio.
People with complex needs rarely have an opportunity to express themselves in a way that is meaningful to them. ATA2, its artworks and a special project publication has been an opportunity to do this. It revealed something about the spirit, abilities and individuality of those involved and showed how inclusive, creative and community based provision can break down social barriers.
This pilot project will support the case for further work of this nature. Access To Art 2 is supported by HCAT who have built this annual programme of learning into their new Foundation Degree.
Project Dates:
Workshops - October to December 2005
Project publication - March 2006
