This successful in-house programme is extending to two days a week.
This ongoing programme of weekly studio work actively
promotes and enables communication, choice and
decision making, (verbal, non-verbal and visual) through
creative processes and partnership working. The work
made by people involved in OPEN STUDIOS feeds back
into Person Centred Planning and reviews through film,
photography and portfolios of work that support the
choices, desires and developments of individual participants
The twelve portraits have been completed and an installation of the films has been built.
The installation (shown in the photograph) is called 'In Transit' has been to:
Derby for an 'Arts and Social Care' event in November 2007
Manchester for Paradigm's 'Walking The Line' conference 2007
One of the young people, Hannah, who was the focus of one of the films, attended the installation in Manchester. Hannah spoke to people about her film and how she used it.
Project Art Works are hoping to next take the installation to a Pavilion conference in Manchester on 5 March called 'Making The Change: Effective Transition For Young People With Learning Disabilities'.
The publication for the project is being put together at the moment.
For any information on the project, please contact Jo or Kate on 01424 423555.
ART BREAKS
Art Breaks is an innovative proposal for children with severe neurological and/or physical impairment (complex needs), whose disadvantages are often compounded by a lack of accessible play activities during school breaks.
Art Breaks offers a rare opportunity to experience a dedicated leisure activity that can be shared with non-disabled siblings and parents/carers. Working 1:1 with our especially trained artists, they will explore play through art. Children with complex needs are often non-verbal, but can communicate simply through decisions about colour, marks and where they focus their gaze. Through vibrant enjoyable art based play and creative activities, we help these marginalised children feel engaged, visible and part of a community. This stimulates excites and thereby enhances their expetience of the world. " I think this project is a fabulous opportunity for these 'special children' to have time to express themselves in a 'safe environment." parent (pilot programme 2007).
We aim to run 40 Art Break sessions per year, spread across School holidays covering April, May, July/August, October and February.
The workshops will take place in our studios in Hastings , East Sussex .
